East/West, 2019, Pencil and Ink painting on rice paper, 195.4x101.7cm
East/West explores the concept of emergence by creating a visual representation of the invisible wonders of the world. One concept I have explored is the concept of ‘Time’. I have demonstrated this in a video where ink was painted onto a thin sheet of rice paper. From the front view, it appeared that marks emerged on the paper over time without intervention. This evokes emotions such as curiosity and wonder from the audience as lines appear over time to create an abstract landscape piece. This piece then becomes the central piece of the three pieces artwork that describe the combination of Eastern and Western’ painting. Each piece possess a unique feature: the Eastern landscape drawing is an abstract representation with Kanjis and the Western landscape depicts a straight forward Australian’s desert. In terms of visual language, stairs, perspective lines and the desert road in each paintings symbolise connection between the West and the East. This is enhanced by the presence of Kanjis and Australian graffiti that can be seen in the separate artworks. They create movement which leads the audience’s eyes. The use of various thickness of lines and textures create variation in my work. Different tones in colour and strong contrast increase a sense of reality and textures such as smooth and/or rough can be felt by various marks
