Hanbok, 2018 Mixed-Media Installation
In this work, I created a dress make from paper, natural items, fabrics, fibres and paints. There was lots of trial and error involved in the creation of this dress as it needed to be unique yet realistically wearable. I decided to go with a paper dress as there were so many possibilities when using paper as a medium, allowing me to be creative with the design process. I ultimately decided to use traditional Korean paper since I love the natural colours the paper comes in. Further, Korean paper is very thin, and this allows them to be easily manipulated. For example, the thin paper meant that I could easily sew flowers onto the dress. I applied several techniques such as cutting, twisting, braiding, sewing and painting to create an interesting and attractive three-dimensional work. Furthermore, by folding paper origami flowers, it added further to the paper medium and to the traditional Korean theme.
